Lack of calibration
One reason why sustainability clauses fail to support and guide action is a lack of calibration – a mismatch between how a requirement or commitment is expressed and the role it is expected to play.
Rather than treating all requirements and commitments as equally binding, it is useful to distinguish between aspirations, expectations, and obligations and to consider which level is appropriate in each case.
When this alignment is missing, requirements and commitments may appear strong in form but remain weak in implementation.
Making sustainability topics explicit and calibrating them appropriately is essential – but not sufficient. Even when sustainability-related content is present and thoughtfully calibrated, it may still fail to support and guide action. Hidden, misaligned, or misplaced content cannot do this either.
